The Indian Army is facing the ire of a parliamentary panel over its continuing practice of employing trained soldiers as sahayaks (personal assistants) of officers.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on defence strongly condemned the system of employing sahayaks to carry out menial domestic chores of officers in one of its reports about three years ago. It has for the third time now slammed the defence ministry for defending the practice and for not heeding its recommendation of abolishing it.
The report on 'stress management in the armed forces', 31st by the committee during the 14th Lok Sabha, has said the sahayak system was "inhuman". It has also stated that the trained soldiers were for fighting wars for the country and they should be used only for such purposes and not stationed at the residences of officers.
But the committee's current report on the budgetary demands for grants, presented to the Lok Sabha Wednesday, said it "places on record the anguish over the disrespect of one of their important recommendation" to abolish the system.
The committee, headed by Congress MP Satpal Maharaj, has also declared that the defence ministry owed it an explanation for not implementing the recommendation.
Dismissing the repeated justification of the defence ministry that the sahayak system was a necessity, the committee said it was "not convinced" with the reasoning given by the defence ministry that the army personnel functioned in pairs and the soldier was the buddy of the officer.

Comment: The Buddy system draws a flak. There is no justification for having Sahayaks in Peace Stations and Training Institutions. Senior Officers (Red Tabs) should set the trend and shed this Buddy system in Peace Stations and Cantonments.

The whole nation is proud that the cricket team has won the world cup after a gap of 28 years since 1983. There were jubilations/ celebrations all around hailing Dhoni and his men in blue. Even the Chairperson of UPA Mrs Sonia Gandhi did not lag behind and was seen mixing with the crowd to be part of the frenzy. Starting from the ICC, States, corporate’s, railways everyone has come forward to shower praise and money/ wealth on to the players to endorsing brands making them richer by a couple of crores. No hard feelings. The team has done a good job and deserves a pat.
Now that the euphoria of the cup is waning it is time to do some introspection as to how the country views its war heroes and what the Govt/ State offers them to sacrifice their lives at the alter of duty.
Each player would get Rupees One crore from the BCCI in addition to its share from the ICC, 2cr for Dhoni and one cr each for the four Delhi boys; land/ house to Dhoni & Sachin by the Uttarakhand Govt; one crore to Sachin and Zaheer by Maharashtra Govt; one cr to Yuvraj and Harbhajan by Punjab Govt; land to Dhoni for cricket academy in Jharkhand; Housing plots to team members by karanatka Govt; Audi to Yuvraj and lifetime railway pass to travel by first AC to all.
The team partied at the same Taj Hotel which was the battle ground on 26/11 & witness to many a soldier giving up his life. Major Unnikrishnan who died while fighting the terrorists is yet to receive his complete NOK entitlements. He gave his today for the tomorrow of others so that they can party all night without any threat.
The world Cup finals at Mumbai was held under safe environments with the army, navy, coast guard, NSG and what not to ensure the conduct of the match without a hitch. Remove the men in uniform and see if the events pass smoothly, be it CWG games or cricket match.
The Kargil War has still its shadows on the number of officers/jawans who laid their lives to protect the nation and its territorial integrity. What the recipients of Param Vir Chakras/ Mahavir & Vir Chakras got in comparison to the cricket boys is known to all (peanuts). What the families of the dead go through can only be experienced by them. Having a decent living is hard to come by. It’s passé as far as the nation is concerned. There is no crib here, but for the value of blood, shed for others to have a peaceful life. The railways is not prepared to honour the percentage concession given to the war heroes in stark comparison to a lifetime FIRST AC FREE PASS throughout the country along with a aide to the cricket stars. Let us not forget the Kabul blast in which a Brig was also blown up with a bureaucrat. The Babu got all the cake and the icing, the Brig was treated as a casualty. The PM went and paid homage to the babu and his family, the Brig got the traditional ‘Shok Shashtra’. The naked truth is known to all but yet our tolerance levels are very high and we continue to be downgraded/ kicked around and accept with a smile.
Many have written to the PM on lot of issues without success. The PM himself is a seasoned bureaucrat. Perhaps it would be wise to remind him that one day he too would go away. When the PM passes away, the Generals will stand guard on his coffin and carry it to the pyre and sound the last post; it is for the PM to think whether he has done his bit towards those who guard the nation and would be part of his last entourage till he melts away.
Where do we go from here? Should we be a silent spectator to the happening around us or should we form part of the Anna Hazare team and mobilize people on the lines of Egypt or pass away into oblivion. I leave this thought with you.

Dear friends,
Finalising the location of the War Memorial in New Delhi, to honor those soldiers, sailors and airmen, who paid the supreme sacrifice for defending India. A worthy cause for IESM to take up and expose the callous attitude of the politicians and the bureaucrats. It is their job to reconcile conflicting requirements of different departments/ ministries. The worthy cause cannot be held ransom to such things.
No one less than the Prime Minister should chair a committee to finalise the issue, so that all ministries fall in line.

How grateful is another culture that honours the people who fought to defend them and in the process sacrificed their lives in far off lands. And, here in "Mera Bharat Mahan", the ruling coterie of Netas and Babus deny a decent place at Delhi to honour its own soldiers, who died defending this country. What an irony!.

भारतीय सेना के जवानों के लिए कॉलेज की डिग्री
ज्ञानदीप परियोजना एक समझौता ज्ञापन के आधार पर शुरू किया गया था (एमओयू) 4 सितम्बर 09 पर सेना और इग्नू के बीच हस्ताक्षर किए गए. परियोजना भारत के माननीय राष्ट्रपति द्वारा 19 नवंबर, 2009 को राष्ट्र को समर्पित किया गया. परियोजना का उद्देश्य के लिए मान्यता के अनुसार "सेवा में" व्यक्तियों द्वारा अपनी सेवा कैरियर की संपूर्ण अवधि के दौरान किए गए प्रशिक्षण के लिए द्वारा भारतीय सेना के जवानों को शैक्षिक प्रमाण पत्र प्रदान है. उद्देश्य यह भी है कि उन्हें एक डिप्लोमा के साथ डिग्री / arming इतनी के रूप में एक दूसरे कैरियर के बाद सेवानिवृत्ति की सुविधा के सभी जवानों को सशक्त. इस कार्यक्रम के लिए सैनिकों की उन्हें एक औपचारिक योग्यता से लैस है और उन्हें प्रतियोगी नौकरी के अवसर के लिए तैयारी कर सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद जीवन को बदलने की क्षमता है.
जवानों को जो डिप्लोमा के पुरस्कार के लिए डिग्री / उनके संबंधित रेजिमेंटल सेंटर के माध्यम से ऐसा कर सकते हैं, जो सभी के साथ किया गया है इग्नू आर्मी इग्नू सामुदायिक कॉलेजों के रूप में पंजीकृत रजिस्टर करना चाहते हैं. इन सामुदायिक कॉलेजों में गठित स्वायत्त संस्थानों के रूप में कार्य शैक्षणिक, प्रशिक्षण और प्रशासनिक जिम्मेदारियों आदि किसी भी समय और संबद्धता इग्नू करने के लिए नहीं लेनी होगी. सामुदायिक कॉलेजों के शैक्षणिक कार्यक्रमों की पहचान के लिए स्थानीय नौकरी की आवश्यकताओं और अवसरों की एक आवश्यकता के विश्लेषण के आधार पर इस कार्यक्रम के लिए सैनिकों के समुदाय के लिए की पेशकश की और पाठ्यक्रम में इन निष्कर्षों को शामिल करेगा, और इसलिए आवश्यक है, अगर इग्नू से सहायता लेने में जैसे शैक्षणिक कार्यक्रमों की पहचान करना. सामुदायिक कॉलेजों के मानदंडों और इग्नू, जिसके तहत इग्नू नियम और सामुदायिक कॉलेज स्कीम की शर्तों को संशोधित करने के लिए एकमात्र अधिकार है के द्वारा योजना के लिए निर्धारित दिशा निर्देशों का पालन करेंगे.

The Story of Report My Signal Email Forum and Blog
Today’s veterans are yesterday’s uniformed!!
Having spent many years in the Corps, some as much as 38 years, the Corps becomes more than a family for them. However, on retirement most veterans head home, some take up jobs and a few migrate to other countries. The only medium for Corps news is The Signalman. It is published every four months and the news becomes old by the time our Corps magazine reaches the veterans.
Saddest part is delayed and lack of information about those who pass away. The Friends and Comrades are unable to pay Shradhanjli to the departed souls. Also there is no platform where Corps veterans are able to express their views and thoughts about professional and Corps matters.
A periodic email based letter named REPORT MY SIGNAL was started by Lt Gen Harbhajan Singh, Signal Officer-in-Chief and Senior Colonel Commandant 1988-91, about five years back, with 15-20 email addresses of the Corps Veterans. The Aim was to do networking, remain in touch and exchange information about the veterans and other matters of mutual interest. REPORT MY SIGNAL was chosen as the Title, since it epitomises the Corps of Signals ethos. After a few months, Brig CS Kamboj, VSM took over the reigns. With his dynamism and dedication, he soon made it very popular and informative.
It has become single most important source of the Corps and other news for over 1200 veterans and some ladies from All the Three Services, including 47 ESM organisations, spread all over the world, who have joined up the email list. During 2008, 387 emails were sent out by “Report My Signal”. All the members and ESM organisations on the emailing list of “Report My Signal” have their forward emailing nets. It is estimate that within 24 hours of an email going out from “Report My Signal” around 12000 to 15000 veterans read that email. A large number of Blogs have started posting the emails of “Report My Signal” on their own blogs. However, this forum can only be periodic and every word has to be typed by Brig Kamboj himself.
The advent of Blogs set us thinking to start a Corps Blog. Based on suggestion to Brig Kamboj, he was able to identify (discover would be more appropriate) Col James Kanagaraj, living in Chennai, in Nov 2007, who was then on a visit to USA. Col James Kanagaraj has turned out to be a technical wizard and highly motivated and dedicated. Using emails between Brig Kamboj in NOIDA, Col James in USA and self in Chandigarh, we were able to work out the design and layout of Report My Signal Blog within a few weeks.
Though the original idea was to have only one blog for Shradhanjlis, we decided to split this one Blog into three blogs (Shradhanjli, Veterans Affairs and Professional). The Blog was formally launched on 01 Dec 2007, with an email from Brig CS Kamboj on his Report My Signal Forum.
There was a need to have one to two more veterans to act as moderators. Soon we had two volunteers; Brig Sukhwinder Singh and Maj Ramesh Agnani. However, Maj Agnani asked to be relieved after a few weeks due to other commitments that he had. Since then Col James Kanagaraj has been the Moderator for Veterans and Shradhanjli Blogs and Brig Sukhwinder Singh has been managing the Professional Matters Blog.
Blog is short form of ‘Weblog’ and is a journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. In a classical blog, people worldwide can themselves add comments/views. However, since our Blog deals with Service people and matters, the procedure adopted is that all those who want to post anything on the Blogs have to send the same to the two Moderators, who then post the contents on the Blogs.
The Blog “Shradhanjli” is exclusively for use by All Ranks of Signals. For other two Blogs, all Veteran Officers of the Indian Defence Services are welcome to participate. Generally speaking, all matters concerning the Veterans, professional matters dealing with the Defence Forces, National Security, Technology etc keeping in view security aspects, Shradhanjlis to comrades from Corps of Signals are accepted for posting on the these Blogs. Messages dealing with politics, religion and business are not accepted and security aspects are kept in view.
From a modest unique hits of 20- 30 in Dec 2007 the Blog has grown to hit range of 250- 285 with daily total hits ranging 650 a day in Dec 2008. There has been surge of visits to topics on "Sixth Central Pay Commission" and "Mumbai Terror Attacks".
The Report My Signal Blog is visited by interested people all over the world and has become one of the premier source for information as also expressing opinions and thoughts on National Security and Service matters. It is also heartening to know that we now come to know about the demise of our comrades in the Corps more promptly and are able to pay Sharadhanjlis to them.

2. Indian Ex Servicemen Movement (IESM) is organizing “Paying Homage to the Defence Martyrs” on Vijay Diwas (Victory Day of 1971 War) at Amar Jawan Jyoti India Gate from 12 PM to 1 PM on 16 Dec 08. Large number of Defence Veterans and their families are attending the event. You are requested to cover the event in large numbers and express your solidarity to the Defence Services and their Martyrs of having done the great service to the Nation.
3. Indian Ex Servicemen Movement (IESM) is also organizing a Protest Rally and Relay Fast For Justice at Jantar Mantar New Delhi from 1 PM onwards on 16 Dec 08. Through you (the media), we invite all citizens who support the cause of Defence Services “Injustice to them” by successive Govts in lowering their status and respect for the past six decades to attend the Rally at Jantar Mantar on 16 Dec 08 at 1 PM and strengthen their resolve for peaceful protest Movement and ask the Govt to accept their genuine demands. You are requested to give wide publicity and cover the event extensively.

The Indian Ex-Servicemen comprising all retired defence officers, JCOs and men have been expressing their disenchantment with the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations ever since the report was submitted to the government on 24 March 2008. After projecting the above demands to the various decision makers in the country, and not getting any assurance, as a last resort they have their case to the public. The pan India Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement (IESM)was formed to project their demands jointly. All India Rallies are being periodically organised by Veteran fraternity to highlight the injustices meted to them.
