'Modi has qualities of successful Army commander'

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has all the qualities of a successful Army commander, said General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General I S Singha of the Golden Katar Division here today.
He was speaking at the inauguration of three-day 'Know Your Army' exhibition organised by the Golden Katar Division of the Army.
"Chief Minister Modi has all the qualities of a successful Army commander. His programmes are aimed at development of both the state and the nation," Singha said.
"Like in the Army, he (Modi) keeps deadline for completion of work, and ensures that target is achieved by the set time," he added.
Singha praised Modi and his government for the developmental work in the state.
The Golden Katar GOC also sought land for ex-servicemen housing scheme.
"I would like to request the Chief Minister to provide land to the Army for setting up housing welfare societies for the ex-servicemen in Ahmedabad. Such schemes are available in all other states," Singha said.
The inaugural ceremony saw brilliant performances of Malkhamb, Lazium and Khukri dance by the Army personnel.
The Dare Devils gave a spell-binding performance with stunts on motorcycles.

Corps of Signals’ bike expedition: Centenary Celebrations

As part of its ongoing centenary celebrations, the Corps of Signals is undertaking a motorcycle expedition that will traverse 6,150 km through 14 states over a period of 42 days.
Consisting of two officers and 13 other ranks, the “Mercury Explore Motorcycle Expedition” was flagged-off from Chandi Mandir by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt Gen SR Ghosh, today.
The expedition will culminate on February 14 at Jabalpur, where the corps has its training centre.
Known as “Information Warriors”, the corps is completing 100 years of its existence on February 15.
The aim of the expedition is to motivate the youth to join the Army and also to interact with armed forces veterans en route.
To add to the adventure, the expedition is planned to travel across the breadth of country from Srinagar in the North to Arunachal Pradesh in the far East, passing through some of the most rugged and difficult terrain.

Army show leaves spectators spellbound

About a hundred Army daredevils kept the spectators, including the officers, their families, civilians and schoolchildren, spellbound for over an hour by performing spectacular stunts in the sky as well as on the ground at the cantonment here this evening.
The stunts were part of a special show being organised by the Army to honour with medals its officers and jawans who displayed exemplary courage while fighting militants in different parts of the country. The investiture ceremony would be held here tomorrow.
Lt Gen CKS Sabu, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Command, presided over the function.
Of all, sky divers mesmerised the viewers the most by performing aerobatics in the sky. Lasting for about 15 minutes, the act was performed by six Armymen -- led by Havildar GS Patil - who jumped from two Chetak helicopters from a height of about 10,000 feet.
The open ground where the function was held reverberated with a round of applause after the skydivers landed safely. Two Armymen also performed various events in the sky after diving from a paramotor (a motorised steerable parachute).
Next to come was the show by Army dogs, who displayed their skills by jumping over hurdles and even walking on two ropes. The dog squad (six in number) also displayed the specialised training they had been given to catch and injure militants and other anti-national elements under the command of their handlers.
Then, 10 motorcyclists of the Punjab Regiment, led by company Havildar major (CHM) Rajesh Kumar, displayed some spectacular stunts. Driving a 350-CC Royal Enfield motorcycle while sitting over it in a reverse position and standing on its fuel tank and then driving it were a few among them.
The bikers’ stunts also included jumping over a ring of fire and 10 people making a wall and pyramid while moving on five motorcycles. The Malkham display and hot air ballooning also enthralled the spectators.
Later, jawans of various units captivated the audience by playing different tunes, including those of patriotic songs.

Daring Display of skills by Information Warriors
To mark the 97th anniversary of the Corps of Signals, the “Information Warriors” of the Indian Army, presented a colourful daring display of martial arts (Taekwondo, Kalaripayattu), and motorcycle stunts and their latest communication equipment, here today.
Corps of Signals is responsible for planning, establishing and managing entire Information and Communication Technology (ICT) set up for the Indian Army. The ICT infrastructure apart from catering for the communication requirements for conventional operations also provides communication support to our forces involved in Counter Insurgency operations, United Nation Missions and for emergency communications during natural calamities.
Under the able guidance of Lieutenant General S P Sree Kumar, Signal Officer-in-Chief, Corps of Signals has taken active measures for stabilizing, fine tuning and consolidating the architecture and performance of various communication networks fielded in the recent past. The process of consolidation is aimed at effectively providing secure, reliable, real time communications, round the clock by creating a pan Indian consolidated Army network of networks, which ensured that the aim of transforming Indian Army into a Network Centric Force in near future is fulfilled.
Successful implementations of Project Mercury Connect, an OFC project in rugged North Eastern Sector and Project Mobile Cellular Communication System (MCCS) for extending mobile services to our soldiers in Counter Insurgency Operations in Northern Sector are a few major steps taken by the Corps in achieving the aim.
The Corps of Signals with its responsibility to provide Cyber Security for the Indian Army has ensured Information assurance to the field formations with its trained personnel and resources to thwart any cyber threats. Electronic Warfare and Signal Intelligence units are force multipliers and valuable assets for all future wars. The Corps has also enhanced the technology savvy image of our Army internationally by establishing Computer Training Laboratories in friendly foreign countries.
Signals have always been at the forefront of sports and adventure activities. Sportsmen of the Corps have achieved distinction in Hockey, Wrestling, and Athletics at various national and international level competitions. Motorcycle display team of the Corps famously known as “Dare Devils” hold the distinction of having their feat mentioned in Guinness Book of World records. In the recently concluded 4th Military World Games conducted at Hyderabad and Mumbai the responsibility of Communication, Information Technology and Accreditation was entrusted to Corps of Signals and was executed to perfection.

Adventure Activities: 2007
Indian Army conducted expeditions to Mount Everest, Cycle rally from Leh to Kanyakumari, Motorcycle rally from Imphal to Siachen and Car rally from India to Myanmar. The Indian Air Force’s microlight aircraft flown by Wg Cdr Rahul Monga and Wg Cdr Anil Kumar arrived at Air Force Station Hindon on 19 Aug 07 creating a ‘New World Record’ of fastest round the world trip. Indian Sail training ship INS Tarangini had set sail on Jan 10, 2007, for a ten-month odyssey, named ‘Lokayan 07’. The voyage took the ship to 23 ports spread over 16 countries. The ship entered Kochi on completion of the voyage on Oct 29, 2007.
World record of Biggest Motorcycle Pyramid
The Dare Devils Team of the Corps of Signals (Indian Army) achieved a motorcycle pyramid consisting of 201 men balanced on 10 motorcycles, on July 5, 2001 at Gowri Shankar Parade Ground, Jabalpur, India. The pyramid travelled a distance of 129M.
Previous Record: The world's biggest motorcycle pyramid was formed by Shwet Ashwas, the Motorcycle Display Team of Corps of Military Police, India, on Oct. 15, 1999. The pyramid consisted of 151 men riding for 78M on 11 motorcycles.
