Army flags off motorcycle expedition

TEZPUR, Jan 31: The Corps of Signals of Indian Army will be completing 100 years of its service to the nation on February 15. To commemorate the glorious occasion, the Corps is holding various events across the nation with the aim of showcasing its proud history and achievements, according to a press release.

The Mercury Explorer Motorcycle Expedition which is a part of the ongoing centenary celebrations arrived in Tezpur station in the evening from Tenga on January 30, after covering more than 3,000 km. The motorcycle team was flagged off by Lieutenant General Gyan Bhushan, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps on the balance of its expedition in a befitting ceremony. In spite of passing through rugged and difficult hilly terrain the expedition members displayed indefatigable spirit to continue their further journey to Shillong.

Commencing from January 5 from Chandigarh, the motorcycle expedition aims at motivating the youths in Himalayan region to join the Army and also to interact with armed forces veterans to rekindle the nostalgia of their association. The expedition led by Captain KIS Khangura comprising 15-member will cover approximately 6,150 km passing through Himalayan terrain in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. It has already covered half the distance and the balance is to be covered in the next fortnight before it’s flagging in at Jabalpur on February 14 by the Signal Officer-in-Chief.

As part of its ongoing centenary celebrations, the Corps of Signals is undertaking a motorcycle expedition that will traverse 6,150 km through 14 states over a period of 42 days.
Consisting of two officers and 13 other ranks, the “Mercury Explore Motorcycle Expedition” was flagged-off from Chandi Mandir by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt Gen SR Ghosh, today.
The expedition will culminate on February 14 at Jabalpur, where the corps has its training centre.
Known as “Information Warriors”, the corps is completing 100 years of its existence on February 15.
The aim of the expedition is to motivate the youth to join the Army and also to interact with armed forces veterans en route.
To add to the adventure, the expedition is planned to travel across the breadth of country from Srinagar in the North to Arunachal Pradesh in the far East, passing through some of the most rugged and difficult terrain.

On the auspicious occasion of silver jubilee of 21 Signal Group, an adventurous motorcycle expedition covering a total distance of 4047 Kilometers is being conducted from 28 Jul to 12 Aug 2009. “Silver Stride”, the motor cycle expedition team of 21 Signal Group is a challenging stride towards developing leadership qualities and fostering a spirit of adventure among all ranks of the Group. The motor cycle expedition which was flagged off by Lt Gen P Mohapatra, AVSM, Signal Officer in Chief and Senior Colonel Commandant Corps of Signals on 28 Jul 2009 at India Gate Lawns, New Delhi. The adventure activity encompasses the perils of biking through tough and challenging desert and mountainous terrains of the Indian subcontinent. The route comprises of desert terrain of 940 kilometers and mountainous terrain of 1310 kilometers covering eight states. The motor cycle expedition involves crossing of nearly ten high altitude passes- Rohtang (13,360 feet), Baralacha-La(16040 feet), Nakee-La (15,547 feet), Lachung-La(16616 feet), Tanglang-La (17,582 feet), Chang-La (17,800 feet), Marsimik-La(18632 feet) Polokhang-La, Jalori Pass and Khardung-La (18,380 feet) which is the highest motorable road of the world and will be negotiated via Kullu, Manali and Leh axis. The aim of this expedition is to promote the spirit of adventure and to spread the theme of national integration, peace, harmony and create awareness amongst the youth about the Indian Army.

The team consists of participation from Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Other ranks to demonstrate the seamless established fact of supreme team work and leadership under constrained conditions. The mega event was eye witnessed by a number of retired and serving distinguished Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Other ranks of defence forces, MD of sponsors and media persons.

The expedition encompasses the locations of historic presence of the group to mark the silver jubilee celebration on one hand while on the other would expose the motorcyclists to the challenging and adventurous terrain of mountains and deserts developing their stress skills, leadership and team spirit. The expedition was sponsored by M/S Hero Honda, M/S Bharat Electronics Limited, M/S Shepherd Realms and Miracle Enterprises. The SO-in-C, in his speech during the flag off ceremony lauded the achievement of the group for being one of the most elite units of the Indian Army and Corps of Signals.

Silver Knights en-route would meet ex servicemen and interact with locals to foster a spirit of pride for the Indian Army and would motivate the youth of the places they visit to join the elite Indian Army.

Indian Army's 'Dare Devil' motorcycle display team has found a place in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records. Known for its stunning feats, the team from the Army's Corps of Signals made it to the record book on June 11 this year when it successfully displayed its skill to carry 251 men on 11 motorcycles for a record-breaking distance of 240 metres.

Army chief General Deepak Kapoor felicitated the achievers at a function in South Block in New Delhi on Wednesday, 25 July 2008. 'Dare Devil' captain assured Gen Kapoor that the team would soon be attempting an improvement on its own world record. The 'Dare Devils' already have four world records to their credit since 1991 and all have been endorsed by the Guinness Book of World Records authorities.

The first World Record was made at Gwalior in 1991 when 40 team members rode seven motorcycles to cover a distance of 400 metres. Next came its world record in Pune in 1993, when the 81 team members on nine motorcycles rode for 200 metres. On the third occasion, again at Pune in 1996, the team's 140 men were on 11 motorcycles and they covered 100 metres. Their fourth world record was made at Jabalpur in 2001 with 201 men on 10 motorcycles covering a distance of 100 metres.

The first 'Dare Devils' display was organized in Shimla on March 10, 1935, during the Silver Jubilee celebrations of King George V and Queen Mary's accession to the British throne. From 1935 to 1950, most of the major Army Signal units had small display teams of about 10 members. These teams performed during various functions of their units and also during military exhibitions.

The organization and training of these teams, distributed in penny packets, always posed a problem. Hence, during the third Corps of Signals Committee meeting held in March 1935, it was decided to combine all the small teams into a single major team. Since 1950, the 'Dare Devils' have performed over 800 displays all over the country in units and establishments of the Armed Forces, as well as in civil functions such as Republic Day Parades, Asian Games in 1982, SAF Games in 1987, Third National Games in 1994 and Fourth Military World Games last year.
